April 12 Thought for the day....unexpected results

We have heard that God can and will do exceeding and abundantly beyond all we could hope or ask. The question is do we expect it? Something really unexpected happened in the garden that night.

"Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked." Mark 14:51,52

Is it the fact that a man was naked in Gethsemane unexpected? Well yes, but in an unexpected way. I have heard it preached that this young man was "John Mark" the scribe of this Gospel. I have heard a few other theories of who this young man may have been as well. I think Jesus' power and might, make this young man very special...stay with me, probably something you may have never thought of!

Linen was used for two types of clothing in the New Testament period. It was used for priestly garments and burial clothes. John Mark would not have been wearing a linen garb. When Jesus was buried he was buried in linen. When a person was buried during this time they were naked, covered with spices and wrapped in linen.

Gethsemane, as I mentioned in a previous "thought for the day", was covered with olive trees, rocks, and graves. When Jesus said, "I am He" the power from the Lord knocked the soldiers down and I believe that same power raised a young man, wrapped in a linen cloth, from the dead. Jesus displayed His amazing power in such a way as to remind people that no one had the power to take His life. He healed Malchus' ear and I believe that same power caused a young man to rise from the dead and go looking for who had raised him.

This young man "followed" Him. The word means to continuously follow Him, In other words, even though others fled with the guards, he proceeded to pursue Jesus until he was revealed and they tried to capture him. As anyone who had been buried, he had no undergarments but was naked when his linen cloth, (not cloak, not tunic), was taken from him.

Think about how much power Jesus possessed and still possesses to perform such an "accidental" miracle. Just imagine what can happen in our lives when we begin to trust Him completely. What kind of unexpected results can happen for us? What things of exceeding abundance can the Lord do for us? One of our greatest struggles as members of the Body of Christ is the limitations we have placed on God. Ask Him what limitations you have placed on Him, repent and then look for unexpected results!
